The algorithm said my grandmother’s face wasn’t human enough to unlock her own phone. She’d been trying for ten minutes, growing increasingly frustrated as the facial recognition system rejected her weathered features, the deep lines that mapped decades of Lagos sun, the wisdom written in every crease around her eyes. “This thing doesn’t see me,” she said, switching to Yoruba in that way that meant she was done pretending technology was neutral. She was right, of course. The AI didn’t see her – couldn’t see her – because she looked nothing like the faces it had been trained to recognize.

That moment crystallized something I’d been circling around for months: artificial intelligence isn’t just failing Africa; it’s actively erasing us. And unless we build our own ethical frameworks for this technology, we’ll find ourselves living in a world where algorithms designed in Silicon Valley and Shenzhen decide our fate based on data that never included our faces, our languages, our ways of being human.

The Illusion of Universal Intelligence

The tech world loves to talk about artificial intelligence as if it’s approaching some universal truth, an objective understanding of reality that transcends culture and context. This is perhaps the most dangerous lie ever told about technology.

Every AI system reflects the biases, assumptions, and blind spots of its creators. When facial recognition fails on darker skin tones – as it does consistently – that’s not a bug, it’s a feature of systems trained primarily on lighter faces. When language models struggle with African languages or misinterpret cultural contexts, that’s not inadequate technology, it’s inadequate imagination.

Consider the hiring algorithms being deployed across Africa by multinational corporations. These systems, trained on decades of hiring data from Western companies, perpetuate biases that have nothing to do with African contexts. They might penalize candidates for attending historically black universities, favor communication styles that reflect Western corporate culture, or misinterpret cultural expressions of confidence as arrogance.

We’re allowing machines trained on other people’s prejudices to make decisions about our futures.

The medical AI systems being piloted in African hospitals were trained on data from American and European patients. They struggle to diagnose conditions that present differently in African populations, misinterpret symptoms common in tropical diseases, and recommend treatments developed for different genetic profiles and environmental contexts.

Ubuntu Versus Algorithm: Competing Philosophies of Intelligence

African ethical frameworks offer radically different approaches to intelligence, decision-making, and community responsibility than the individualistic, profit-driven models embedded in most AI systems.

Ubuntu – the philosophy that “I am because we are” – suggests that individual wellbeing is inseparable from collective flourishing. This stands in stark contrast to AI systems designed to optimize individual user engagement or corporate profits, often at the expense of community cohesion and social harmony.

Consider how social media algorithms exploit division and outrage to maximize engagement, undermining the collaborative consensus-building that defines many African governance systems. Or think about credit scoring algorithms that make individual risk assessments without considering the communal support systems that actually determine a person’s ability to repay loans in many African contexts.

Traditional African decision-making processes prioritize consensus, consultation with elders, and consideration of seven generations ahead. AI systems make split-second decisions based on pattern recognition and statistical optimization, with no mechanism for community input or long-term consequence evaluation.

What would AI look like if it were designed around Ubuntu instead of Silicon Valley’s “move fast and break things” philosophy?

The Violence of Invisible Exclusion

The most insidious aspect of AI bias isn’t dramatic failure – it’s quiet exclusion. It’s the loan application that gets rejected without explanation, the job posting that never appears in your feed, the healthcare algorithm that doesn’t flag your symptoms as urgent because they don’t match the training data.

In Kenya, mobile loan apps use AI to assess creditworthiness based on smartphone data—call patterns, app usage, social connections. But these algorithms were designed for formal economy participants, not the millions of Africans who work in informal sectors, share phones among families, or have different social networking patterns. The result is systematic exclusion masquerading as objective assessment.

Educational AI tutors being introduced in African schools were trained on Western curricula and learning styles. They struggle to adapt to communal learning approaches, oral tradition knowledge transmission, or the multilingual code-switching that characterizes many African classrooms. Students whose intelligence doesn’t match the algorithm’s narrow definitions get labeled as struggling learners.

The judicial AI systems being piloted in some African countries for case management and sentencing recommendations carry the biases of legal systems designed during colonial periods. They may perpetuate historical inequities while claiming mathematical objectivity.

Beyond Bias: Imagining Afro-Futurist AI

But this isn’t just a story about technological imperialism. Across the continent, researchers, activists, and innovators are beginning to imagine AI systems that reflect African values, contexts, and ways of knowing.

At the University of Cape Town, researchers are developing facial recognition systems specifically trained on diverse African faces, achieving better accuracy across skin tones and facial features. In Ghana, linguists are building language models for local languages, preserving oral traditions while enabling digital participation.

Nigerian fintech companies are creating credit algorithms that consider extended family networks, community vouching systems, and irregular income patterns common in informal economies. South African healthcare researchers are training diagnostic AI on African patient data, improving accuracy for conditions that disproportionately affect African populations.

These efforts face enormous challenges – limited funding, brain drain as talented researchers are recruited by Western tech companies, and the overwhelming network effects of established AI systems. But they represent something crucial: the possibility of artificial intelligence that serves African communities rather than extracting value from them.

The Ethical Imperative of Self-Determination

Building African AI ethics isn’t just about fixing bias – it’s about asserting our right to shape the technologies that will determine our future. Every day we delay, more AI systems trained on non-African data are deployed in African contexts, embedding foreign values deeper into our institutions and daily lives.

The European Union created GDPR to assert digital sovereignty over American tech companies. China built its own AI ecosystem around different values and priorities than Silicon Valley. Africa needs its own approach—one that reflects our diversity, our values, and our vision for the future we want to create.

This means investing in African AI research institutions, training African data scientists and ethicists, and requiring foreign AI systems to meet African standards for fairness, transparency, and cultural competence. It means building datasets that include African faces, voices, and experiences. It means creating governance frameworks that prioritize community benefit over corporate profit.

We cannot allow artificial intelligence to become another form of technological colonialism, where foreign systems make decisions about African lives based on foreign priorities.

The Faces the Algorithm Must Learn to See

Late at night, when I think about my grandmother struggling with that facial recognition system, I imagine a different future. I imagine AI systems trained on the full spectrum of African beauty – the geometric scarification of the Yoruba, the elongated earlobes of the Maasai, the intricate braiding patterns that carry cultural history. I imagine algorithms that understand the pause before speaking that shows respect for elders, the indirect communication styles that maintain social harmony, the collective decision-making processes that prioritize community consensus.

I imagine AI that enhances rather than threatens our cultural practices, that amplifies rather than silences our languages, that recognizes intelligence in all its forms – not just the narrow definitions that emerged from Western educational systems.

This future is possible, but only if we choose to build it. Only if we insist that the artificial minds we create reflect the full spectrum of human intelligence, wisdom, and ways of being.

The algorithm that couldn’t see my grandmother’s humanity was trained by people who never learned to see it themselves. The question is: what will we teach the machines that will shape our children’s world?


Every face that goes unrecognized, every voice that goes unheard, every way of knowing that goes uncoded – these aren’t just technical failures. They’re moral choices about whose humanity counts. What choice will we make?
